One test settles nearly all of it: <strong>if the value changes from day to day, it belongs to a calendar reading such as Panchang; if it never changes, it belongs to your birth chart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your Rasi, your Nakshatra and your Lagna were fixed at the moment you were born and will be the same in ten years. The daily Yoga on a Panchang page, by contrast, is the same for everyone in your town today and different tomorrow. Same vocabulary, completely different reading.<\/p>\n<h2>Kundli &mdash; your birth chart<\/h2>\n<p>Your Kundli is the chart drawn for the exact moment and place you were born: where the planets and signs stood at that instant, arranged in a diagram. Everything else in this glossary is either a part of that chart or a way of reading it. In everyday use the word covers both the diagram itself and the report built around it.<\/p>\n<p>The same chart can be drawn in more than one regional style. The boxes sit in different places on the page, but the planetary positions are identical &mdash; a North Indian and a South Indian drawing of your chart do not disagree, they just look different.<\/p>\n<h2>Rasi &mdash; your zodiac sign<\/h2>\n<p>Rasi means a sign of the zodiac, and there are twelve. Where a reading names one specifically, it tells you which body it is talking about: <strong>Chandra Rasi<\/strong> is the sign the Moon stood in at your birth (your Moon sign), <strong>Soorya Rasi<\/strong> is the sign the Sun stood in, and a <strong>Rasi Lord<\/strong> is the planet that classically rules that sign.<\/p>\n<p>Your Rasi is fixed for life. It is worth knowing that the Moon crosses all twelve signs in about 27&#8531; days &mdash; roughly two and a quarter days, or about 54 hours, in each one. That is why your birth date on its own is not always enough, and why two people born on the same day can carry different Moon signs.<\/p>\n<p>If the sign you are shown is not the star sign you have used all your life, there are two separate reasons and they often stack. First, Vedic readings usually lead with the <strong>Moon<\/strong> rather than the Sun. Second, the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac is measured against the fixed stars and currently sits about 24 degrees away from the Western (tropical) one. Either reason alone can move you a sign; together they frequently do.<\/p>\n<h2>Nakshatra &mdash; the lunar mansion, and its pada<\/h2>\n<p>A Nakshatra is a finer division of the same circle: there are <strong>27<\/strong> of them, against twelve Rasis, so each Rasi spans two and a quarter Nakshatras. Each Nakshatra is divided again into four quarters called <strong>padas<\/strong>, which is what a report means by <strong>Nakshatra Pada<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Nakshatra Lord<\/strong> is the planet that rules your birth Nakshatra. That single line does more work than it looks: it is the starting point of the Dasha sequence described below. In KP readings the same idea appears under a different name &mdash; the Nakshatra lord is called the <strong>star lord<\/strong>, and each Nakshatra is divided once more into nine <strong>unequal<\/strong> subs to give a <strong>sub-lord<\/strong>. The subs are sized in proportion to each planet&rsquo;s share of the 120-year timing cycle, so the widest runs a little over 2 degrees and the narrowest only about 40 arc-minutes.<\/p>\n<h2>Bhava &mdash; the houses of the chart<\/h2>\n<p>Bhava means house. The chart is divided into twelve houses counted from your Lagna, each covering an area of life. Keep the two ideas apart: a planet&rsquo;s <strong>Rasi<\/strong> tells you which sign it is in; its <strong>Bhava<\/strong> tells you which house it falls in. A reading normally gives both.<\/p>\n<p>One structural fact explains a lot of what you will read: the 1st house is the only house that is both an angle and a trine, which is why the rising sign and its ruling planet carry so much weight in interpretation. Note too that some techniques size the houses unequally from calculated cusps rather than giving each sign a whole house &mdash; so the same planet can land in a different house in a KP reading than in your Rasi chart, without either reading being wrong.<\/p>\n<h2>Lagna &mdash; your ascendant<\/h2>\n<p>Your Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born, and it is where the houses start counting from. You will also see it called the ascendant or the rising sign.<\/p>\n<p>Lagna is the most birth-time-sensitive figure in the whole chart. The rising point moves roughly one degree every four minutes, so it changes sign about every two hours. A birth time recorded to the nearest hour is enough for your Rasi and usually your Nakshatra; it is not always enough for your Lagna. You may also meet <strong>Chandra Lagna<\/strong> and <strong>Surya Lagna<\/strong> &mdash; the same chart re-counted as though the Moon sign or the Sun sign were the starting point. They add no new astronomy; they are the same positions viewed from a different corner.<\/p>\n<h2>Ayanamsa &mdash; the gap between the two zodiacs<\/h2>\n<p>Ayanamsa is the angular difference between the <strong>sidereal<\/strong> zodiac used in Vedic astrology, which is measured against the fixed stars, and the <strong>tropical<\/strong> zodiac used in Western astrology, which is measured from the equinox. It is currently around 24 degrees and drifts by roughly one degree every 72 years.<\/p>\n<p>Every Vedic calculation applies an ayanamsa &mdash; you will rarely need to do anything with it, but it is the reason two things happen. It is why your Vedic sign can differ from your Western one, and it is why a planet sitting close to a sign boundary is occasionally listed in different signs by two different astrology services: traditions use slightly different ayanamsa values, and KP uses a slightly different one again. That is a difference of method, not a fault in your chart.<\/p>\n<h2>Dasha &mdash; the planetary periods<\/h2>\n<p>A Dasha is a period of time ruled by a planet. Rather than reading a chart as one fixed picture, the Dasha system divides your life into consecutive planetary periods, so the same chart is read differently depending on which period is running.<\/p>\n<p>The system you will meet most often is <strong>Vimshottari<\/strong>, a 120-year cycle in which each of nine planets holds a fixed share &mdash; Venus the longest at 20 years, the Sun the shortest at 6. In the classical method the sequence begins from the lord of your birth Nakshatra, which is why that line in your report matters so much. Each period subdivides into smaller sub-periods, so a reading may quote a major period and a minor one running inside it at the same time.<\/p>\n<h2>Yoga &mdash; two different things with one name<\/h2>\n<p>This is the term that trips up most first-time readers, because it means two unrelated things on the same platform.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A yoga in your birth chart<\/strong> is a named combination of planets &mdash; a recognised pattern such as one of the five Panch Mahapurush yogas. It is personal, it comes out of your own chart, and it is fixed for life. Most charts carry only one or two, and a short list is completely normal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yoga in a Panchang reading<\/strong> is something else entirely: one of the five daily elements of the almanac, and in the related Anandadi Yoga reading, a classification of how favourable the day is. It is the same for everyone reading it that day, and it changes tomorrow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Apply the one-line test: if it changes daily it is a Panchang reading; if it never changes it belongs to your chart. The daily side of the family &mdash; Tithi, Karana, Vara, the Muhurat windows and the day-favourability terms &mdash; is defined in the separate Panchang and Muhurat glossary in this Knowledge Base rather than repeated here.<\/p>\n<h2>Upagraha &mdash; the shadow points<\/h2>\n<p>The Upagrahas are not planets. They are calculated points, sometimes called sub-planets or shadow bodies, and there are usually eight of them. They split into two families that behave very differently.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gulika and Mandi<\/strong> are found by dividing the span from sunrise to sunset into eight parts, running the sequence from the ruler of the weekday, and taking Saturn&rsquo;s part. Because they hang off sunrise and sunset, they move with your <strong>place<\/strong> and with the season, and a few minutes&rsquo; error in your birth time can move them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dhuma, Vyatipata, Parivesha, Chapa, Ketu and Upaketu<\/strong> are fixed offsets from the Sun&rsquo;s position. The Sun moves about a degree a day, so these six sit in the same sign for roughly a month &mdash; which is why people born days apart often share them exactly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Watch one name in particular: the Upagraha <strong>Ketu<\/strong> is not the lunar node Ketu of the Rahu&ndash;Ketu pair. They share a word and nothing else, and there is no reason for them to sit in the same sign. The test: if it is listed among the nine grahas it is the node; if it sits beside Dhuma and Chapa it is the Upagraha.<\/p>\n<h2>Ashtakavarga &mdash; the strength scores<\/h2>\n<p>Ashtakavarga is a scoring system. Points, called <strong>bindus<\/strong>, are awarded sign by sign, and the totals are used to judge how supported a sign or house is. An individual Ashtakavarga chart scores <strong>one<\/strong> planet, up to eight points in a sign. <strong>Sarvashtakavarga<\/strong> adds the seven classical planets together to give one total per sign or house.<\/p>\n<p>A useful piece of arithmetic before you worry about a low number: those combined totals always add up to <strong>337<\/strong> across the twelve houses, so the average house scores a little over 28. Some houses <strong>must<\/strong> come in below average &mdash; that is division, not a bad chart. Traditionally the low thirties and above are read as strong and the low twenties as weak, though sources differ on where the lines fall. Sign-based terms &mdash; Rasi, Nakshatra &mdash; survive a rough time; Lagna, the houses and anything counted from them do not. The meaning of Nakshatra never changes, but the number printed beside it belongs to that particular reading &mdash; and a value from a daily page will not match one from your birth chart, because they are not measuring the same thing.<\/div>\n<h2>Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n<h3>Another astrology site gives me a different Nakshatra, Lagna or house<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> two ordinary differences of method. Services apply slightly different ayanamsa values, which matters most when a planet sits near a sign boundary; and the rising point moves about a degree every four minutes, so a birth time that is a few minutes out can move your Lagna, your houses and a KP sub-lord.<br \/><strong>Fix:<\/strong> check your birth time to the minute against your records, make sure both readings used the same birth place, and compare like with like &mdash; a KP reading and a Rasi chart are expected to place houses differently.<br \/><strong>Escalate if:<\/strong> the same date, time and place submitted twice on the same MyMahotsav page returns two different answers. That is not a method difference &mdash; raise it with support.<\/p>\n<h3>My Rasi is not the star sign I have always used<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> almost certainly the two reasons stacked &mdash; the reading is following the Moon rather than the Sun, and the Vedic zodiac sits roughly 24 degrees away from the Western one.<br \/><strong>Fix:<\/strong> check which sign the reading actually names. Chandra Rasi is your Moon sign, Soorya Rasi is your Sun sign, and even your Soorya Rasi can differ from your familiar star sign because of the zodiac gap. Nothing needs correcting.<br \/><strong>Escalate if:<\/strong> one report labels the same sign as both Chandra Rasi and Soorya Rasi, or the labels contradict each other within a single reading.<\/p>\n<h3>The calculator will not run and keeps asking for the place<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> <strong>Place Of Birth<\/strong> is a look-up field, not a free-text box. Typing a place is not enough &mdash; the form only accepts an entry you have chosen from the suggestion list, so a typed-but-unselected place reads as missing.<br \/><strong>Fix:<\/strong> type a few letters, wait for the list to appear, and click the entry. If nothing matches, shorten the search term or use the nearest large town instead of a village or a neighbourhood.<br \/><strong>Escalate if:<\/strong> even a major city returns &ldquo;No results found&rdquo; after a page refresh.<\/p>\n<h3>A reading quotes a price in credits and I cannot find where to top up<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> there is no wallet or top-up screen to find. Credits describe what a lookup costs at the service that calculates it &mdash; and where a reading is offered in another Vedic language as well as English, the non-English version generally costs about double, because of translation work at that service rather than any MyMahotsav mark-up. The free calculators take no payment and create no order at all.<br \/><strong>Fix:<\/strong> use the free calculators as they are.
