Brushes & Brilliance: Thanjavur Painting Workshop

Day 1:

  1. Introduction to Thanjavur Painting (1 hour)
    • Overview of Thanjavur painting, its history, and significance
    • Introduction to traditional techniques, materials, and tools
  2. Materials and Tools Demonstration (1.5 hours)
    • Explanation and demonstration of materials required
    • Step-by-step guide to preparing the wooden base, applying chalk powder, and sketching the design
  3. Color Mixing and Application (2 hours)
    • Demonstration of color mixing using natural pigments
    • Practical session on painting the design, emphasizing techniques for vibrant colors and smooth application
  4. Gold Leaf Application (1 hour)
    • Demonstration and hands-on practice of applying gold leaf or foil
    • Tips for handling and applying gold leaf effectively
  5. Hands-on Practice (2 hours)
    • Participants begin working on their own Thanjavur painting under the instructor’s guidance
    • Individualized support and feedback provided as participants explore techniques and create their artwork

Day 2:

  1. Continuation of Hands-on Practice (3 hours)
    • Participants continue working on their Thanjavur paintings
    • Instructor provides assistance and guidance as needed
  2. Design Options and Personalization (1 hour)
    • Presentation of design options and themes
    • Encouragement for participants to personalize their designs based on interests and preferences
  3. Cultural Context and Significance (1 hour)
    • Discussion on the cultural significance of Thanjavur painting
    • Exploration of themes, symbolism, and regional influences
  4. Completion and Presentation (1.5 hours)
    • Participants complete their Thanjavur paintings
    • Sharing session where participants showcase their finished artworks and discuss their creative process
  5. Feedback and Reflection (1 hour)
    • Group discussion on participants’ experiences, challenges, and learnings
    • Reflection on the journey of creating Thanjavur paintings and its significance
  6. Resource Materials and Further Exploration (30 minutes)
    • Distribution of handouts, reference materials, and online resources
    • Recommendations for continuing exploration of Thanjavur painting techniques and history.

Lunch time is between 12 PM – 1 PM.

We will only be providing snacks and tea @ 4:30 PM.
