Experience a unique evening as you step into India. Watch the screening of the 1960 film, “Devi” by legendary director, Satyajit Ray.
The film is in Bengali with English subtitles.
ABOUT DEVI:
In rural India in the second half of the nineteenth century, after his son leaves for Kolkata to complete his studies, a wealthy feudal landlord is seized by the notion that his beloved daughter-in-law is an incarnation of the Mother Goddess—a delusion that proves devastating to the young woman and those around her.
“Devi dramatizes the ways in which the symbolic deification of women comes at the cost of their material agency.” – Criterion
“Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon.” – Akira Kurosawa
VENUE DETAILS:
The film screening is at the charmingly eccentric India Club lounge. The India Club has remained much the same since its opening over 50 years ago.
Hidden up a flight of stairs, enter a timewarp with portraits of the Independence era on the walls, bottle-green leather chairs, red lino flooring and laminate tabletops. It is a British curry house of the first generation.
Described as “the London of black-and-white movies…India Club is part of London’s restaurant history.” – Bloomberg
