Navarasa, the nine human expressions, gives dance completeness. The concept of rasas is an outstanding contribution of Indian culture to the world of art.The term navarasa is derived from two words, nava meaning “nine” and rasa meaning “taste” or “flavor”. The nine emotions or rasas, are Shringara (romantic love or beauty), Hasya (laughter or mirth), Karuna (compassion), Raudra (anger), Veera (heroism), Bhayanaka (horror), Bibhatsa (disgust), Adbhuta (wonder), and Shanta (peace). Each of these emotions is associated with a particular color, sound, facial expression, and gesture, and is expressed in different music, dance, and theater forms. These emotions are intended to evoke a particular feeling in the audience, and they form an essential part of classical Indian art forms.
