One of the most celebrated Hindu religious traditions, Satyanarayana Puja is a ritual performed by every Hindu family. Whether it is before a wedding, to celebrate graduation, to pray for a sick person or to express gratitude to the Almighty, it is a practice that has divine benefits.

When is Satyanarayan Puja performed?

Usually, Satyanarayan Puja is performed on a particular full moon day on the full moon day of every month. This can be done on Ekadashi – the eleventh day after the full moon.

Satyanarayan Puja should also be performed on the following days in Hindi

  • on every full moon
  • on every ekadashi
  • on kartik purnima

While this particular day is a common belief in the minds of people, there is no specific date or fixed method to perform this puja. It can be done whenever you want.

Summary of worship rituals

The devotees begin the puja to Lord Ganesha – the one who can remove obstacles from our lives. Lord Ganesha is worshiped with a special prasadam and flower petals with hymns and various names.

The second important part of the ritual is to worship the Navagraha (the 9 celestial beings of the universe) consisting of Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. This ritual can remove all the bad effects of the Navagrahas (or 9 planets) to bring back peace and well being in the house.

The rest of the puja consists of several stages in which offerings and flowers are made to Lord Satyanarayana. Panchamrit is made for cleaning the place where the idol is to be kept. After the deity is placed properly, she is worshiped by the devotees by chanting various names of Lord Satyanarayana and offering prasadam like fruits and sirni.

Another important requirement for this puja is the reading of Lord Satyanarayan’s Katha, or Satyanarayan Katha, which all must take part in this ritual. The story details the origin of this worship, its benefits and how it can transform lives and bring good fortune. The puja culminates with a special aarti which can be performed by the devotees.
